questions about syllabus

What kind of projects will we be doing that helps us find our true identity?
Would you consider this course to be similar to psychology?

  1. 1. Finding your true identity is a life-long process, and it will probably not happen in a classroom. But through education in the classroom, we can open our minds to new ways of seeing ourselves and our world. In order to see things in a new way, it is useful to be open to other students' perspectives, to voice our own ideas (which may be different from classmates) and to be willing to feel uncomfortable with this difference. 2. NO. This class is very different from a psychology class, and it is not about being in "therapy" with others.

The study of culture is addressed by many kinds of scholars in the humanities and social sciences. There is a lot of overlap between psychology, sociology, history, anthroplogy, cultural studies, critical theory, etc. We will learn from experts, but the class is mostly about cultivating our voice as amateur philosophers who happen to have a lot to share from our own life experiences, and also learning from others.
